When Mayor-elect Mamdani takes office, he will control over 6,300 miles of streets throughout the five boroughs. Reducing car dependence is one of the best ways to reduce costs for New Yorkers. Owning a car costs nearly $9,000 annually, while taking transit costs just $1,500.

Ahead of today’s City Council hearing on Vision Zero, we rallied with City Council Transportation Chair @CMShaunAbreu, @kaymsanto, @OpenPlans, @NYC_SafeStreets, and our fellow Safe Streets Coalition members to demand real action on street safety.

We’re calling on New York City to follow through on its commitment to safer streets. That means implementing Sammy’s Law in neighborhoods across NYC and passing the Stop Super Speeders law to slow down our most reckless drivers.

It also means bringing long-overdue, lifesaving safety improvements to our most dangerous intersections. New Yorkers deserve streets that put their safety first. It’s time we deliver.

"Charlie Baker, a spokesperson for Transportation Alternatives, noted that Prop 3 seemed aimed at cleaning up the unfinished work of Mamdani's predecessors. 'There's so much in the backlog from the Adams administration—stalled projects that have just been stuck in limbo.'"

" 'It's rare to get the opportunity to directly vote for safer streets,' said Charlie Baker, a spokesperson for the nonprofit Transportation Alternatives. Baker said the charter amendment would also help Mamdani deliver on his campaign pledge to make city buses faster."

It's a simple fact: speed kills. @EmilyAssembly and I passed the Stop Super Speeders Act to empower NYC to slow down the most reckless drivers. Today, @kaymsanto introduced a Council bill to implement the program. We're one step closer to safer streets for all New Yorkers. – at Brooklyn, NY

We can’t wait to rein in New York City’s most dangerous drivers. That’s why we rallied with state and local elected officials outside City Hall today. Let’s pass the Stop Super Speeders bill into law and slow these reckless drivers down!

This expansion is great news! Every vehicle in New York City's fleet should get Intelligent Speed Assistance. We must ensure that City vehicles save lives, not take them. The City should also shrink the fleet — both in terms of vehicle size, and the total number of vehicles.
From a 50-vehicle pilot to a national model for street safety! With @NYCMayor, we’re expanding our Intelligent Speed Assistance fleet to 3,000 city vehicles—plus partnering with NYC School Bus Umbrella Services (NYCSBUS) to pilot pedestrian alerts on 100 buses! 🚌

This is a great idea! We called for universal countdown clocks in our 2024 bus stop heat report, written in partnership with NASA:
New Yorkers deserves to know when their bus is coming. Through 'Next Stop: Fast Buses, Better Service,' we're going to double the number of bus shelters with real-time information beginning this year... with plans to more than quadruple the number of stops equipped by 2030!

Slowing down super speeders saves lives. @Sen_Gounardes and I fought for years to pass our bill at the state level, and now @kaymsanto is taking it across the final hurdle at the city. We are fighting for every family that’s lost a loved one to a preventable crash.

"It is a commonsense reform to allow the Department of Transportation to... make these fixes,” said Grace Rauh, the executive director of Citizens Union. "We would not ask the NYPD when they are concerned about the safety of New Yorkers to slow down their response."
