I know this post is bait, but Morrowind keeps on being a fascinating example of a lot of peoples strange inability to abstract the interactions and points of engagement in a game from its audiovisuals. Like, "How can the game be fun to play if it isn't fun to watch?"
“Oblivion and Skyrim are modern day RPG slop with watered down systems and quest markers that ruin everything. Morrowind is so much better.” Morrowind gameplay:

i feel like this is a real turning point for the industry, especially regarding the general public sentiment. these kinds of games have gone to such extreme lengths to be approachable and inoffensive that they became repulsive instead.
nah this game sounds fucking horrible man I can’t 😭

It also explicitly says political correctness is a weapon to prime people into instinctively rejecting information out of discomfort and not because of its value.
Playing MGS2 now and getting to the whole plan about using memetics to control society and pit people against each other while they don’t notice liberties being siphoned for a false sense of “security”

I'm a RE tourist, only just started playing it, but I feel bad for the fans. I know what it's like to have your favorite games receive a shitty adaptation written with contempt by narcissists

Everything far away in a game engine can feel small, flat, and washed out. That is correct perspective, but it can make for some poor scenery sometimes. Two features I've added to my engine try to fight against that: Spatial Recession magnifies the distance. After a vertex is projected I push its screen position outward from center. Near geometry is untouched. It only moves x and y, never depth, so nothing sorts differently and nothing z-fights. The result is a long lens bolted onto the far half of a wide one: the tower and the ridgeline loom instead of receding, while I keep the wide field of view I actually play in (FOV is identical in both of these examples). Dimensional Falloff is four distance ramps on the surface itself. Lighting contrast flattens so distant hills stop having a hard lit side and a hard dark side, which is what haze does in real life. Color then desaturates toward its own brightness to fake more distance. Then that desaturated color is pushed, and that is the one doing most of the visible work here. Last is texture detail, with a custom MIP value based on distances. All of it keys off real radial distance from the camera rather than depth This is so it stays put when you turn your head. Performance cost is next to nothing. The recession is two lines in the vertex shader. The falloff is a few lerps at the end of the pixel shader, which was already computing that distance for the mip bias anyway. Quite happy with the results, what do you think? #gamedev

What nobody seems to observe is how next gen puritanism has grown line for line, beat for beat, viewpoint to rule, with online monetization restrictions and requirements on all the content they consume. Same way people pick up phrases and ways of talking from their favourite content creators, they're also picking up what is or isn't ok to see and say. What to shy away from, what to restrict, what to demand goes away or is removed from content and gaming. To the streamer or content creator, it's simply to make the stuff they use rule compliant. It's not art criticism but income compliance. Example "if they would only remove all that unneeded fan service from gacha games chat, like mannn I don't even know who it's for" they don't really care, they only say it because they can't use it for monetized content and know it's popular with viewers, so they're missing out on revenue. Which is why all these content creators are shying away from and treating these things like complete no goes. Things to avoid like it's life or death. Throwing their hands in front of the screen and yelling "no, no, no skip, skip!" when they see some side boob, it isn't values or a moral system (i'm sure most before the regs would have made boob jokes) but just to keep being monetized. However the people viewing, consuming all day. All the time in the back of their heads are absorbing that as it's a no go subject, it's a bad word, bad thing, it's something we don't like or want to even see anymore. Violence, sexualization, an ever increasing rejection of anything, even the lightest of character femininity showing through is now treat like p*rn, because that's how harshly the regulations on content monetization treat it now. All the shifts into extreme puritanism and moralizing just so happen to line up near exactly with changing online regulations and restrictions about what you can say and show in your content without being demonetization. For the creators its simply compliance, but for their viewers it has become a template of their own moralization. Same way a kid learnt their values by constantly being taken to church every week. They're now being subconsciously told what is sin (a crime against advertisers) by YouTube, by Twitch, TikTok. It's why you're seeing people say 'unalived' in real life now, when that whole phrase is due to social media rules around monetization. There is no reason to use it in reality with your friends or other people but they do because they have absorbed it being used through all their content, therefor it becomes their character. They're living their lives unaware they're shaping themselves, their real values, views and acceptability around a monetization system. When it comes to fictional content, they're not puritans...they're advertiser friendly.
All the Scarlet Skips drama has shown me is that we've lost Ecchi as an art form. Any vague amount of attractiveness is considered porn. Every bit of jiggle is porn. People are so used to bland, colourless media that anything vaguely fun means the artist must perish.

I'm not sure why Modern Fallout fans get so upset with me: You won. Since 2008 Fallout has been irrevocably transformed into a mainstream multimedia franchise. It's been diluted, neutered and homogenised. You've got endless merch, Pop Vinyls, Cash Shops and Season Passes. You have clothing lines and lunch boxes and an enormously successful TV show. Do you get upset because deep down - you know I'm right? Is there some tiny part of you that wishes for a dark, nuanced world to explore that also treats you like a thinking adult? Just maybe there's hope for you yet. Maybe.

Tim Curry's excellence as an actor is him comitting to the bit 10,010%. But what's equally tragic is that, at least for Western Media, we can't seem to find writers to treat the source material with the same respect.
With Tim Curry’s passing I am reminded of his brilliant delivery of Captain Hook as he laughs in the face of death. He showed great talent through his performances and breathed life into every role. I hope he’s resting in peace.

It's because these games are funded by investors that don't know anything about games and game development. Their only indicator of a game being good is the graphics and spectacle being showcased.

I'll keep saying it: this will never be fixed until it is the underlying credit card service that must pay for fraud. So long as it continues to be passed on to the merchant, it will never get fixed, just mitigated (and still at high cost to the merchant).
if you want a sense of how much fraud we deal with, stripe has blocked $300M worth of fraud for us in the past few days

The state of Windows is so damn bad we're now celebrating when its BUILT IN weather app takes SIX SECONDS to fully load...🤦‍♂️
Microsoft is cooking! Windows 11’s faster app launches released today, and everything is noticeably faster on low-end PCs. Windows 11’s CPU boost feature is no longer just for Start, Search, and shell flyouts. After installing the August 2026 security update, it is now silently active while opening apps too. We tested this on the same PC before and after KB5121003, and the difference is real. Notepad, Calculator, Chrome, VLC, PowerPoint, Weather, and even the Epic Games Store now trigger the same Low Latency Profile behavior Microsoft first rolled out for the Windows shell in June. The moment you open an app, Windows briefly pushes the CPU close to its maximum frequency for one to three seconds, finishes the launch work faster, and then drops back to idle. This is called “race to sleep,” and it is not a lazy trick. macOS and Linux already do similar things. CPU utilization does not spike the same way, so this is not your PC suddenly working harder forever. It is a short frequency burst to make Windows feel more responsive. I know people love mocking Windows performance, and often for good reason, but this one actually works. Apps open faster now, especially on budget and older PCs where every second of delay is noticeable. Windows 11 is finally getting the kind of performance work it should have had from day one.

At what point do we accept that web and C# apps were a mistake? I haven't seen a single one, ever, in my life, that's responsive, fast, and uses resources like they aren't unlimited. It's not funny, it affects daily work, it makes everyone lose a ton of time. 6 shameful seconds

BREAKING: Iran warns it is preparing for military operations on US soil following a “new military doctrine tasking IRGC to attack enemy in its soil,” adding Iran will “take operations into enemy territory, into the enemy’s lands, and carry out operations far from our own territory,” IRGC senior advisor General Mohammad Reza Naqdi says. “Whenever the conditions are favorable and the order is issued, we must be able to take the operation into enemy territory,” Naqdi adds.
