What if your pill could confirm you swallowed it? 💊
Medication non-adherence costs the US over $100 billion and contributes to 125,000 preventable deaths annually. [1]
In 2026, MIT researchers unveiled biodegradable smart pills that signal ingestion. A separate HIV prevention study tested digital pills with 15 participants. [1][2] 🔬
The opportunity? Better adherence insights, fewer avoidable costs, and more personalized care.
But monitoring isn't the same as improving outcomes. Privacy, affordability, and patient consent remain critical.
Healthcare leaders must prove clinical value before scaling.
🤔 Where should we draw the line between smarter medication monitoring and patient surveillance?

Kynurenine Pathway/ IDO/ Sirt1/ NAD+/ Astrocytes/ Neurons
we have shown for the first time, that competitive inhibition of IDO and QPRT, in both astrocytes and neurons results in a dose-dependent decrease in intracellular NAD+, highlighting the essential role of the KP in NAD+ production in human brain cells. KP inhibition leads to a decrease in NAD+ synthesis and a dose dependent increase in extracellular LDH activity indicating reduced cell viability and increased cell death. Importantly, while IDO and QPRT activites appear to be inhibited equally in both astrocytes and neurons, intracellular NAD+ levels and cell viability are significantly higher in astrocytes than neurons, suggesting that changes in KP metabolism have a greater effect on the neuronal population compared to glial cells.
As NAD+ serves as a substrate for SIRT1 activity, we have also shown herein that inhibition of KP metabolism can lead to a significant decline in SIRT1 activity in the astrocytes and neurons.

Can a single face photo help predict cancer survival?
New study @LancetDigitalH suggest that facial features encode both physiological ageing and imminent mortality risk, showing that consumer-grade photographs carry multiple physiological #health signals.
An #AI foundation model was trained on more than 40 million face images, including photos of people with cancer.
Among about 38,000 #cancer patients, those whose faces looked at least five years older than their actual age had a 21% higher risk of death, after adjusting for age, sex and cancer type.
Of patients whose estimated biological #age was more than 20 years above their real age, 21% died within 90 days. The model focused mainly on the area below the eyes and around the nose.

Why Low Testosterone Isn’t Just About Getting Older: New U.S. Army Findings Point to Belly Fat
Key Points:
▶️ Age was not associated w/a steady decline in testosterone.
▶️ Gold-standard body fat measurements (DXA scan) more strongly explained changes in testosterone.
▶️ Waist size, an accessible & practical measurement, captured testosterone levels just as well as DXA.
▶️ Maintaining testosterone levels w/age may support a longer life in good health.

Is “moderate” #alcohol drinking really safe? A new analysis in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs confirms it is not.
Drinking an average of 14 drinks a week (two a day) was associated with a 1 in 25 lifetime risk of dying from 🍺 alcohol-related causes. At around seven drinks a week, the risk was about 1 in 1,000. It rose sharply above one drink a day, for both men and women.
The researchers found no protective effect of #alcohol at low levels. Even about one drink a day was linked to higher risk of death from #cirrhosis, oral and oesophageal cancer.
These are population-level estimates, not individual predictions.

Your scale can look fine while hidden belly fat nearly triples later dementia risk.
-
Normal BMI is not protective. Two people with the same BMI can carry very different amounts of visceral fat. (multiple observational studies)
• Waist ≥35" (women) or ≥40" (men) predicts heart disease and death better than BMI
• High midlife visceral fat linked to ~3× higher later dementia risk
• Women with elevated levels face a 37% higher risk of asthma
• Liposuction only removes pinchable fat. (It leaves the active visceral fat untouched)
This week, do this:
1. Measure your waist (not just the scale)
2. If you’re ≥35" (women) or ≥40" (men), prioritize reducing visceral fat
3. Focus on diet, strength training, and sleep before chasing more procedures
What actually moves the needle for you: waist measurement, strength training, or something else?

Two hours of sitting impaired upper & lower limb endothelial function (flow-mediated dilation; FMD) & increased blood pressure in healthy older adults. Consuming flavanols prior to sitting preserved endothelial function in both conduit arteries.
